The topic of the internationalization of higher education (IHE) is of crucial importance today, given the context of increasing global interconnectedness and the challenges that education faces in a complex and dynamic world. Research in this field provides valuable insights on how to design policies and strategies that promote inclusive and equitable internationalization, ensuring that the benefits of educational globalization are accessible to all. This text proposes to present a state of the art of contemporary debates on higher education in Latin America. To this end, the construction of the IESup agenda is presented through the Regional Conferences of UNESCO in Latin America; the challenges and new forms of internationalization that are developing within the framework of globalization processes and the impact of the pandemic (Covid-19) on the reconfiguration of IESup in the region. In light of the discussions presented, it is necessary to promote horizontal collaboration instead of vertical dependence. This involves developing academic integration programs that promote a real and equitable exchange of knowledge.
