Abstract

Childhood and Early Childhood Professionals represent a field of knowledge intersected by numerous other areas, including sexuality. In this article, we reflect on the importance of sexual education from an early age in order to prevent sexual violence. To do so, we aim to analyze the relationship between childhood and sexual education from the perspective of early childhood education professionals in the municipal education network of Belém-Pa. We start with the central question: How do early childhood educators understand childhood and sexual education? We conducted a collaborative research (Ibiapina, 2008) with a qualitative approach, inviting all early childhood education schools in the city to share their knowledge and concerns on the subject. The data collection procedures included cultural and formative dialogical circles. The results reveal understandings woven by the research participants in dialogue with intellectuals in the field who situate childhoods in history (Ramos, 2000), sociology (Sarmento, 2009), sexual education (Figueiró, 2018), and child development (Sanderson, 2005). In short, a pedagogy for preventing sexual violence against children can and should be built in early childhood education in every city, as is being developed in the city of Belém.
