POEMAS DE BLUES E JAZZ - A MUSICALIDADE NEGRA DE LANGSTON HUGHES

Resumo

A poesia de Langston Hughes, escritor negro estadunidense da primeira metade do século XX, incorporou elementos do blues e do jazz, representando grande inovação literária não só pelo seu caráter de experimentação poética, mas também por consistir em uma forma de autoafirmação cultural do povo negro. O intuito deste artigo é examinar sua poesia engajada, com ênfase especial em sua musicalidade. Analisamos seus blues poems e jazz poems, identificando suas características principais, de modo a verificar como Hughes executou a difícil tarefa de emular formas e ritmos musicais na poesia. Compreendemos, assim, o modo como a simples opção por homenagear tais estilos possui, independentemente da temática de cada poema (que podia ser social ou não), certa carga de engajamento na causa dos negros.

BLUES AND JAZZ POEMS - THE BLACK MUSICALNESS OF LANGSTON HUGHES

The poetry of Langston Hughes, a black American writer from the first half of the twentieth century, incorporated elements from both jazz and blues, which constituted a huge literary innovation, not only for its vein of poetical experimentation, but for being a statement of cultural self-affirmation of the black people. The aim of this article is to examine his socially-aware poetics, with a particular emphasis toward his musicalness. We analyze his blues and jazz poems and identify its most prominent features, so as to verify how Hughes performed the difficult task of imitating the forms and rhythms of music within poetry. We understand thus how the very option of paying a tribute to these musical styles has, regardless of each poem’s theme (which can or not be social), a certain degree of adherence to the cause of the black people.
