RELAÇÕES ENTRE CAMPO E CIDADE NA FORMAÇÃO DA IDENTIDADE BRASILEIRA: O PROGRAMA ESTÉTICO DE BERNARDO GUIMARÃES

Resumo

Um dos principais fatores na construção do padrão estético literário do romantismo brasileiro no século XIX foi a busca da nacionalidade, inicialmente por meio do indianismo, posteriormente do sertanismo. O programa estético de Bernardo Guimarães está em consonância com esse movimento: toda a sua narrativa está voltada para a exaltação dos valores do sertão, que não estariam ainda corrompidos pela influência estrangeira, como os das cidades, onde o homem é digno, respeitador e honesto, a natureza é exuberante, as instituições sociais são sagradas, a religião é a base da sociedade. Para construir a imagem desse Brasil autêntico, o autor utiliza histórias e lendas originárias do meio popular, levando ao leitor, seu grande alvo, a defesa intransigente do país.

RELATION BETWEEN COUNTRYSIDE AND CITY IN THE FORMATION OF THE BRAZILIAN IDENTITY: BERNARDO GUIMARÃES‟ AESTETIC PROJECT

One of the most important factors in the construction of the literary aesthetic standard of the romanticism Brazilian in the 19th century was the preoccupation about the constitution of an own nationality, in the beginning by the indianism, and later by the hinterlandism. Bernardo Guimarães‟ aesthetic program is in consonance with this movement: all his narrative is related to the exaltation of values of hinterland, which still wouldn„t be corrupted by foreign influence, as in the cities, where man is worthy; nature is exuberant; social institutions are sacred; and religion is the base of society. To build the image of this authentic Brazil, the author utilizes histories and legends from the popular medium, taking to the reader, his big aim, the intransigent defense of the country.
