CALIBAN E A CIDADE DO RIO: UMA RELAÇÃO DE RECIPROCIDADE

Resumo

Este estudo analisa as interseções entre território urbano e a literatura a partir do personagem Caliban do conto “Brazil”, de Paule Marshall. Será feita uma análise da relação dialética entre o protagonista e o espaço onde circula, já que ambos constroem-se a partir das relações que imbricam entre si. Em “Brazil”, o espaço tem grande relevância, pois está intimamente associado ao personagem, influenciando-o nas atitudes, pensamentos e na formação de sua identidade cultural. Inversamente, Caliban deixa sua marca nos lugares em que passou, mostrando com nitidez a estreita relação entre o espaço e o habitante, ou entre o Rio de Janeiro e Caliban.

CALIBAN AND THE CITY OF THE RIO: A RELATIONSHIP OF RECIPROCITY

This study analyzes the intersections between urban territory and the literature departing from the character Caliban in Paule Marshall‟s short story "Brazil". It will be made an analysis of the dialectic relationship among the protagonist and the space where he circulates, since both are built starting from the relationships that imbricate to each other. In "Brazil", the space has great relevance because it is intimately associated the character, influencing him in the attitudes, thoughts and in the formation of his cultural identity. Inversely, Caliban leaves his mark in the places where he passed, showing with clearness the narrows relationship between the space and the inhabitant, or between Rio de Janeiro and Caliban.
