OF MICE AND MEN: ANÁLISE HISTÓRICO-LITERÁRIA DA GRANDE DEPRESSÃO

Resumo

O presente artigo tem o objetivo principal de analisar o livro Of Mice and Men, do escritor norte-americano, John Steinbek, com o intuito de perceber as aproximações simbólicas e interpretativas acerca do fenômeno da Grande Depressão e seus impactos sociais, políticos e econômicos, sobretudo nas migrações de trabalhadores das periferias urbanas. A cultura do American Dream foi abalada pela crise econômica. Metodologicamente, o artigo centrou-se nas leituras analítico-interpretativas do livro do escritor, com um olhar para os traços gerais de sua obra, friccionando com alguns eventos ligados ao recorte temporal no qual se insere a escrita do livro. Como bases teóricas, recorreu-se às discussões feitas por Chartier (2002; 1998), Lukács (2011) e Robert (2007). O romance do autor norte-americano é tomado, nessa análise, como um romance histórico, pois, mesmo que metaforicamente, apresenta indícios de um dos momentos mais conturbados na vida política e econômica de seu país, que ressoaria no imaginário, na identidade e na memória da população.

OF MICE AND MEN: HISTORICAL AND LITERARY ANALYSIS OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION

the present article has the main objective of analyzing the book Of Mice and Men, by North-American writer, John Steinbeck, with the purpose of noticing the symbolical and interpretative links about the phenomenon of Great Depression and its social, political and economic impacts, especially about the migration of workers from urban peripheries. The culture of the American Dream was disturbed by the economic crash. Methodologically, the article is based on the analytical and interpretative reading of the writer’s book, with a overview around the general aspects of his work, rubbing it with some events linked to the temporal period in which it’s insert the written of the book. As theoretical bases it used discussions done by Chartier (2002; 1998), Lukács (2011) and Robert (2007). The North-American author’s romance is noticed, in this analysis, as a historical romance, because, metaphorically, it presents signs of one of the most difficult moments in political and economic life of his Country, which resonate in the imaginary, identity and memory of the population.
