THIS IS A HISTORY TO PASS ON: UMA LEITURA DE WAITING IN THE TWILINGHT, DE JOAN RILEY

Resumo

O presente artigo tem como principal objetivo analisar os elementos que designam ser o romance da escritora caribenha Joan Riley, Waiting in the Twilight, como uma história a ser passada a diante. Colocando em diálogo com o romance de Tony Morrison, Beloved, esta narrativa veicula, através de seu pano de fundo, um cenário subserviente, escravista e discriminatório protagonizado pela imigrante Adella, mulher negra e pobre de origem caribenha. As mulheres negras oriundas do Caribe, durante o período colonial, tiveram de migrar para países estrangeiros, fugindo de uma situação que as negava enquanto seres humanos como o servilismo sexual, a escravidão e a submissão aos trabalhos pesados. Diante disso, colocamos em análise o contexto da mulher negra caribenha, migrante e pobre, na narrativa de Riley, como vítima e agente de uma história isenta de glória, mas que é digna de ser passada a diante.

THIS IS A HISTORY TO PASS ON: A READING OF WAITING IN THE TWILIGHT, FROM JOAN RILEY

The present article has as objective analyzing the elements which designate to be the Joan Riley’s novel, Caribbean Writer, Waiting in the twilight, as a history to be passed on. Putting in dialog with the novel Beloved, written by Tony Morrison, this narrative vehicle, through its background, a subservient, slaving and a discriminating set represented by the immigrant Adella, a black and poor woman from Caribbean. The black women from Caribbean, during the colonial period, had to migrate to foreign countries, fleeing from a situation that denied them while human beings as the sexual servile, the slavery and the hard work submission. In front of this, we put in analysis the black woman Caribbean context, migrant and poor, in Riley’s novel, as a victim and agent of a history free of glory, but that is worthy to be passed on.
